Music video 101
Let's start basic, What is the purpose of music videos? and why do we like them so much?
Firstly, they are an alternative way to tell the story of the music. Visuals attract more people, that's a marketing technique and music will attract a larger audience. Also, music videos can help promote directors (that's where they usually start at) and perhaps the main reason the music video promotes the MUSIC!
Types of music videos:
Performance
Combination
Narrative
Concept
Narrative music videos tell a story!
They are usually in the style of a short film telling the story of one character or many, narratives will be detailed to fit both the style of the music but also to what the artist wants to convey through their music.
Concept videos are more difficult to explain, since they can be absolutly anything that is very original.
From recording backward to having amassive number of people dancing with umbrellas or harder... dancing on treadmills!
Concept videos may include the artist or just a cast, it really is up to the directors and record label demands.
This type of music video is not often used by female artist or newly formed artist since they are the ones that the lable want to 'put out there'.
Performance videos are extremelly popular in some music genres such as Rock, Punk, jazz and sometimes pop too.
Performance videos are usually put together with either concept or narrative but is also often used alone.
Performances help put the image of the band/artist on the screen which is always a good way to get more attention.
Performance videos can be quite creative too. Varying camera angles and movements can wok excellently with effects ans the way that the instuments are synced or not.
Combination music videos can be a mix of any of the other 3. this allows a great space to experiment with different techniques and styles.
For more established musicians this is the option they take. Having a narrative or concept BUT also getting their faces out there.
This is today's most popular music video style as the artist can tell a story whilst still having their faces plastered all over the video with their performance!
